An accessory that might be more unknown to the average Joe that’s just starting out in the gym, is the accessory of weightlifting straps. These straps, like the name imply, help you with lifting/moving heavier objects as your hands don’t have to grip as much as they would have to without straps. Find out more below to learn about the advantages of weightlifting straps.

The patent and idea for the item known as weightlifting straps was issued by a Russian citizen living in New York in 1901. According to both the inventor, Vitold Drossness and an author who later reported on the issue, Marillia Coutinho, these straps were rather invented for manual workers than people wanting to lift heavy objects. Within 20 years the equipment was already being used in the athletic world by athletes in sports such as golf and tennis.
Eventually, around the 1940’s weightlifting straps became what they are today, a useful tool to help people lift heavier objects as the task of grip is placed unto the straps rather than human hands. Weightlifting straps help you move significant amounts of weight, as grip won’t be as much of a limiting factor anymore. The way they work is by securing the straps on your wrists, after which you must slide your hands through the loops, ensuring the strap is attached smoothly to both the barbell and your hands. They must be sitting comfortably, yet also tight to not restrict any movement. The loose end of the weightlifting straps must be threaded from under the bar and wrapped around securely. To finish up preparing for your lift, you must rotate your wrists slightly so the weightlifting straps can coil around the bar.
To make a long story short, weightlifting straps have been proven to be able to boost your strength by about 5-20%, depending on the weight and number of repetitions you’re going for. Furthermore, a weightlifting belt will also be able to help you greatly increase your strength, but that’s a story for another time.
